Time watching television and computer can affect the heart

Spend more time in front of a television or computer monitor, known as "screen time" is related to signs that the heart needs more time to recover from exercise, an indication of poor heart health. In the new study, published online January 17, Heart Asia, involving more than 2,000 people, all Americans in their thirties and who had no heart disease.

Participants performed a stress test of eight minutes, which allowed researchers to determine how long it took your heart rate back to normal after vigorous activity. The hearts of people who spent more time in front of television screens and computer tended to take longer to recover, even when researchers accounted for other possible factors and tried to reduce its influence in the statistics.

The same occurred among those who did not exercise much or nothing at all, according to Dr. Jien-Jiun Chen, Cardiovascular Center Hospital Yun-Lin and his colleagues at National Taiwan University in Douliou, Taiwan. Another related research spend more time in front of a screen with obesity, abnormal glucose metabolism and metabolic syndrome, which together increase the risk of heart disease, the study authors said in a news release from the journal's editor .

They added that compared with other sedentary behaviors, time spent in front of a screen less energy to read, write or drive.
