Fatty acids are a type of fat essential for the body, but are not produced by the body. They are present in small amounts in foods such as fish oils, flaxseed and cod liver. Therefore, some physicians recommend them as a supplement in the diet. The study included 120 women between 17 and 37 years diagnosed with the problem.
They were followed for eight months: two before the start of treatment and six during ingestion of the capsules. One group received a pill with a gram of fatty acids, another received 2 grams and the third took placebo. In addition, the volunteers filled a daily range of markers to describe the intensity of symptoms.
At this time, all groups had improved, without introducing changes in cholesterol levels: the first group said it reduced symptoms by 64%, the second group and third in 74%, 16%. "The first signs of improvement came after three months and there were no reports of side effects," said Edilberto Rocha Filho, study author and medical officer of the Department of Gynecology, UFPE.
